Miss Katie
It all started for me at the Debbie Strang Dance Center in Billerica, MA at age 3. The studio quickly became one of my favorite places in the world. By the time I hit 5 I knew I this was what I wanted to do in life. I started off with ballet and tap, then progressed on to many styles, such as jazz, hip-hop, acro, Irish step, and many more. Every spring was our annual production, and my very first audition in 2001 I was so excited to receive the role as Michael Darling in Peter Pan. Two seasons later, I was awarded my first solo as I played the part of Chip in Beauty and the Beast. For the rest of my years at DSDC, I had earned lead roles in each production, including Flounder in The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and the Queen in Snow White. By age 12 I had finally worked my way up to join all advanced classes, where I soon began expanding my techniques beyond the studio. I have performed in competitions such as Dance Ovations, and West Coast Dance Explosion, as well as attending many conventions such as WCDE and Jump. I have also taken many master classes over the years from well known choreographers and performers including Lauren Gottlieb of So You Think You can Dance in Rhode Island, and Kenny Wormald of TV’s Dancelife at the Gold Studio in Brockton, MA.
2007 is when I began my teaching career, starting off as the assistant of a 4 year old tap class. The following year, at age 14, I given my own 5-6 year old hip-hop class. I came to SDA in 2009 and joined the Diamond Dancers. My second year I became the Thursday Preschool teacher. Now with my third year arriving I am currently still a member of the Diamond Dancers, and taking several other classes here at SDA. This year I will be a senior in high school and hope to continue on to college in New York City where I can continue to dance. I am very excited to also be taking on the Beginner tap class. There’s nothing better, in my opinion, than teaching what I love and watching the students progress so far as the weeks go by, seeing the confidence in their performance build, and seeing them so happy to return each class. My goal in teaching is to run a productive class, while still maintaining a fun environment!
